Job Description

SUMMARY

Implements instructional program in English as a Foreign Language to international students


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1 - Classroom Instruction, Management  & Maintenance

  • Prepare lesson plans and materials in advance for all classes
  • Follow curriculum; supplement with additional materials as needed
  • Create a positive, dynamic, student-centered learning environment
  • Coordinate lessons with other teachers as needed
  • Assign and correct homework assignments weekly
  • Maintain discipline in the classroom; report any problems to the Academic Coordinator
  • Maintain classroom, resources, and equipment; report any problems to the Academic Coordinator

2 - Student Assessment

  • Assess each student's initial performance in class; recommend level changes as needed
  • Evaluate and adapt strategies and materials; differentiate instruction to address diverse learning styles and progress
  • Assess each student's achievement by administering weekly progress exams

3 -  Academic Record-Keeping

  • Take attendance and fill out attendance records daily
  • Complete written record of lesson plans and materials covered in class daily
  • Grade and record scores for weekly progress exams

Return attendance/daily  record folder to Teachers' Room at the end of each day

  • File academic records in appropriate binder weekly
  • Have students complete Student Evaluations at the end of each session
  • Recommend a Certificate of Completion for each departing student who has satisfied attendance requirements and performance standards
  • Complete Student Progress Report for each departing student

4 - Professionalism

  • Arrive at school no later than 8:20a.m., 10 minutes prior to commencement of class
  • Begin and end all classes on time; do not dismiss classes early
  • Do not leave class unattended during class time
  • Exhibit knowledge of and adhere to all policies and procedures  in the Teachers' Handbook
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor during all school functions
  • Assist the Academic Coordinator and fellow teachers as needed
  • Inform the Academic Coordinator of planned and unplanned absences in a timely manner; make appropriate arrangements and provide materials for a substitute

5 - Professional Development

  • Attend, participate in, and present at scheduled staff meetings and workshops
  • Participate in conferences and industry workshops on EFL methodology and instructional delivery

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

The minimum requirements for an EFL instructor at IH San Diego:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university
  • CELTA or equivalent TEFL Certificate (120 hours face-to-face instruction+ 6 hours assessed teaching practice)
  • 3 months of experience teaching Intensive EFL/ESL programs in a group setting to adult speakers of other languages

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Previous international travel and/or study abroad experience
  • Previous teaching experience abroad
  • Knowledge of or fluency in a foreign language

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient English speaker with the ability to read and interpret educational texts, syllabi, and procedure manuals; ability to write examinations, curricula, and routine correspondence
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; tact, patience and diplomacy, particularly with non-native English speakers
  • Cultural sensitivity and a desire to work in a diverse environment
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances; ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of principles  of second language acquisition, learning styles, effective teaching strategies, and communicative  methodology
  • Ability to create a student-centered  learning environment  and engage and motivate second language learners
  • Ability to develop and utilize effective tools to monitor student progress and provide clear, constructive feedback
  • Ability to achieve positive educational outcomes through effective instructional delivery and classroom management
