Your First Steps: Resume to Job Application

A simple 5-step path

If you are not sure where to begin, follow this proven sequence that takes you from zero to hired:

Step 1: Write your resume

Use our AI Resume Builder to create a professional, ATS-friendly ESL teaching resume in minutes. You can also download our free Word template and customize it yourself. Focus on highlighting your teaching experience, certifications (TEFL/TESOL/CELTA), and relevant skills.

Step 2: Write a cover letter

Use the AI Cover Letter tool to generate a tailored cover letter for each job application. A good cover letter should be customized to the specific school and position — never send a generic one.

Step 3: Build a portfolio

If you have teaching experience, assemble a portfolio with lesson plans, student feedback, classroom photos (with permission), and any professional development certificates. This sets you apart from other candidates.

Step 4: Search and apply for jobs

Browse the Job Board and filter by country, job type, and salary. Apply directly through the school or recruiter’s posting. Tailor each application to the specific role.

Step 5: Get certified (if needed)

Many countries require a TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certification. Check our Certifications section to compare options and find the right one for your target country.

Pro tip

Research your target country’s hiring season. Most schools in Asia hire for terms starting in March and September, while European positions often open in August and January. Timing your applications around these cycles dramatically improves your chances.
