Either from home or in a British Council office, to conduct interviews and carry out assessments for the IELTS Speaking module, maintaining the standards required by the IELTS Professional Support Network (PSN) and the British Council. This role may also require travel to test centres across China for periods of one to five days to support the smooth running of operations.
Main Opportunities and Challenges:
This post offers an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain work experience in China, to enhance skills and expertise in language assessment, and to be part of the worldwide British Council network.
Flexibility in working hours is expected in order to meet operational needs. The job may require some travel regionally and nationally which usually involves one to four overnight stays in good quality hotels. It will involve weekend working hours or evening work as well as occasional work in the British Council office. For work not completed at home or in the office, the facilities and building standards can vary. Whilst we make every effort to ensure that standards are met, as these premises are not owned and managed by the British Council, we cannot guarantee that this will be the case in all test venues all the time.
Language Assessment Consultants / IELTS Examiners are required to maintain certification in the speaking module for the duration of the contract.
If the successful applicant is not currently certificated as an IELTS examiner, the applicant will be required to meet the PSN Minimum Professional Requirements and certificate in the Speaking module during the 2-month probation period of the contract.
The post holder will be responsible for delivery of IELTS Speaking Test interviews, will work closely with the exams support teams and report directly to their Team Leader in one of our 4 Centres.
All qualifications must be validated by a reputable institution and accredited by a professional certification board. If requested, applicants are required to provide additional information regarding their qualifications (e.g. transcript, course curriculum, evidence of external validation, accreditation by a certification standards board, etc.).
Role-Specific Knowledge & Experience Requirements:
“Full-time teaching” is classified as a minimum of 14 hours of face-face teaching per week. Freelance and volunteer teaching are not included.
Salary and Benefits:
The IELTS examiner package in China is based on a ‘core + top-up’ model. There are two components to the package:
There is seasonal fluctuation in opportunities to work, and examiners are usually very busy during months where demand is high while having more free time at other times.
The Examiner Administration teams provide information about likely fluctuations in work opportunities so that examiners can plan annual leave accordingly.
This flexible approach puts you in control, enabling you to decide when to add to your earnings and when to feed your sense of adventure - to this end, we also offer Chinese language learning support.
Anyone who accepts an offer to become a full-time examiner in China will initially be offered a ‘speaking-only’ contract and will only be trained to deliver exams in the Speaking module of the IELTS test. Those examiners may be trained as Writing examiners at a future date, but this is not guaranteed.
